A quick glance at your schematic shows a finally, the ftdi reference says you can leave reset floating (as you've done) but the arduino boards that use the ft232rl have it connected to vcc.

Ft232rl is an impressive chip because it implements full v2.0 usb protocol, needs no external crystal, has integrated eeprom for device id.
